A limb swells when lymph fluid cannot drain away. Left alone it grows heavier, harder and more prone to infection. Treatment aims to bring the size down and keep it there.

Almost every plan begins with compression and skin care. Surgery is added for patients it genuinely suits.

Measurements of both limbs are taken at the first visit and repeated later, so progress is judged on numbers rather than impression. Wear loose clothing that lets the whole limb be seen and measured.

Dr. Ashutosh Shah is a Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon (DNB) practising in Surat, Gujarat. The work covered by this site is reconstructive, which means restoring form and function after birth differences, burns, injury, cancer surgery, infection and chronic wounds.
Consultations are unhurried. You are told what the problem is, which options genuinely apply, what each involves, and what it will realistically achieve, including where an operation is not the right answer.
Most patients spend on garments and therapy over time rather than on a single procedure, so the plan is priced in parts and explained before anything is started.
Patients come from across the city for arm swelling after cancer treatment, and from the coastal and rural belt for long standing leg swelling.
Each page below covers one kind of work at the Surat clinic, with the questions patients ask about it, the cost band and how to reach the team.
These are the questions asked most often when a limb has been swelling for months or years. If yours is not here, send it on WhatsApp and the team will reply, usually the same day.
Ask your question →Removing or irradiating lymph nodes in the armpit reduces the drainage the arm depends on, so fluid collects in the tissue. It can begin soon after treatment or years later, and early attention keeps the limb softer and easier to manage.
It behaves as a long term condition rather than a short illness. Swelling can usually be reduced a great deal and held there with compression, exercise and skin care, and surgery suits selected patients. Progress is judged by size, comfort and infections.
It is a microsurgical operation in which tiny lymph channels are joined to nearby small veins, so trapped fluid drains into the venous system. It suits limbs where those channels still work, which is why imaging is done before it is offered.
Usually yes, at least for a period and often for much longer. Surgery improves drainage but does not remove the underlying problem, so compression and skin care continue. The garment may become lighter or be worn for fewer hours as swelling settles.
The principles overlap, since both involve blocked lymph drainage, but skin thickening and repeated infection are usually further advanced in filarial swelling. Treatment starts with hygiene, infection control and compression, and surgery is weighed once the skin settles.
Fluid rich tissue and cracked skin let bacteria in easily, and every episode of cellulitis damages drainage further, so the swelling worsens. Daily washing, drying between the toes or fingers, treating fungal infection and prompt antibiotics break that cycle.
Examination, measurement of both limbs and imaging of the lymph channels guide the decision. Early swelling with working channels may suit drainage surgery, while long standing fatty swelling needs a different operation. Some patients do better on compression alone.
